People who feel lonely often go online and try to communicate with others so that they can make sure that they definitely exist in a human society.
When he/she has difficulties of showing their feelings to the outside world, which happens frequently, he/she possibly thinks that he/she is isolated from the world.
However, once he/she knocks the door of social networking services, he/she finds a cozy place and is able to show their feelings without hesitation. And then someone who he/she has never met sympathizes with him/her and he/she can confirm that he/she belongs to society.

In general people who live in a virtual community try to make friends there to find connection to others.
They actually don’t care about others' personality so much and attempt to make “friends” with as much people as possible.

A friend of mine and I conducted an experiment in Habbo Hotel, which is a social networking service aimed at teenagers to see how people react when they meet an unpredictable person in a virtual community.
We put our avatars in a public space in Habbo Hotel and had a 9-minute conversation about economy. We decided to totally ignore others during the conversation.

Can you guess what happened then?
Actually our avatars were surrounded with several people’s avatars and they tried to communicate with us although we paid no attention to them.
A boy complained of loneliness and asked my friend to be his girlfriend at the beginning. After a while, it seemed that he realized he was ignored, and then he started to try hard to join our conversation even though it was clear that the topic was boring for him.
A girl also attempted to join us and ask questions to us.

Although they were getting more and more confused through the conversation because we continued our conversation at our own pace, they didn’t leave us to my surprise.
They worked hard to make us recognize their existence by showing their emotions, asking questions, and giving their opinions. They didn’t think seriously about the fact that we were pretending to be unreasonable to establish communication with.
However, they found that it was impossible for them to be recognized by us in the end, and then they left us.

Thus, isolated peeople tend to run into a virtual community to make people recognize their existence because they need to confirm thtat they certainly belong to a human society to survive in the real world.
